What is Reiki?
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing. It is based on the idea that “life force energy” flows through us and that illness is caused by a disruption of this energy. By using specific symbols and channelling energy, it is believed that the body can be filled with positive energy, bringing us into balance and reinforcing the body’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels.
The word Reiki is Japanese for “universal life energy” – the vital energy that flows through every living thing. It is an ancient system that encourages physical, mental and emotional healing as well as spiritual growth.
Although Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion or belief system.
How does it work?
When we are healthy, life force energy flows through the physical body and aura, nourishing and supporting the organs and cells of the body in their vital functions. If this energy is blocked or restricted, it disrupts the function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body, the consequences of which can be a lack of physical energy, emotional distress, pain or disease.
Life force energy is also responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted through negative though patterns and feelings about ourselves and consequently diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki energy is channelled through the therapist and flows to the affected parts of the body, increasing the vibratory level of energy and charging them with positive energy. This causes the negative energy to disperse, and in the process, Reiki clears and heals the energy pathways, allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
What does it involve?
A treatment is carried out fully clothed and either lying on a couch or sitting comfortably on a chair. Hands are then placed non-intrusively on or near the body in a sequence of positions, each one being held for several minutes. Universal energy is channelled through the therapist to bring balance and harmony. There is no massage or manipulation, and the whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms.
Whilst you are receiving a treatment you may or may not feel sensations, however, most people feel relaxed and at peace afterwards. Occasionally a treatment could stir up emotions or lead to a healing reaction such as headaches or flu like symptoms.
How can it help me?
Reiki is a holistic therapy and works on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. It helps promote a sense of wellbeing and deep relaxation.
As a natural form of healing, Reiki may support and enhance other treatments. It should not, however, be regarded as a cure for such conditions.
Reiki may also:
- Restore the whole person to a state of harmony and balance
- Cleanse toxins from the body and stimulates the immune system
- Relieve pain, stress, tension, anxiety and muscle spasms
- Increase energy and vitality
- Release blocked energy and promotes a state of total relaxation
- Enable you to take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing
- Enhance the beneficial effects of all other therapies and meditation
- Help with insomnia
